Allow me to introduce myself!
Hello everyone! My name is Chloe and I am the owner of AccessiBUILD!

Working as a Recreational Therapist in Mental Health for almost a decade, my work has always focused on supporting individuals in participating in meaningful leisure pursuits. This often requires activity modification or the evaluation of a site to ensure it doesn't pose a barrier to successful engagement. However, it wasn't until maternity leave after the birth of my child that I was faced with my own barriers to the built environment. Perhaps I was before, too, but with a stroller in tow, it was now all the more apparent. Getting in and out of businesses, down narrow sidewalks, manoeuvring through gravel parks, and the list goes on. Why was everything so challenging? What could be done to make it easier?

With a little extra time on my hands, I enrolled in the Rick Hansen Foundation's Accessibility Certification Professional Training Course. This course opened my eyes to things I didn't understand before. We learned to identify physical barriers people with (and without) disabilities face and how Universal Design principles can promote increased access. Now an RHFAC Designated Professional and member of the Accessibility Professional Network, I am doing what I can to change it!
I acknowledge that my experience comes from a place of privilege, and that many, many people have come before me, both facing and fighting barriers in our community. AccessiBUILD is here now to join in and fight the good fight of making our community more accessible!
